Head of International

Mary Callery joined ShinAwil as Head of International/Executive Producer in April 2017.

Before joining ShinAwil, Mary was Project Manager at Bord Scannan na hEireann/The Irish Film Board where she served as executive producer across a range of feature films and documentaries including Oscar nominated Song of the Sea (Dir. Thom Moore); Sing Street (Dir. John Carney) and The Queen of Ireland (Dir. Conor Horgan)

Prior to joining the IFB Mary was Head of Production & Development   and Executive Producer at Parallel Films where credits include several films for SyFy (US), Crown TV(US), Ruth Rendell’s Thirteen Steps Down for ITV, The Clinic for RTÉ and feature films including A Film with Me In It and The Food Guide to Love.

Prior to that Mary was Commissioning Editor – Drama at RTÉ responsible for all of RTE’s original drama – in-house and independently produced.  She commissioned a number of award winning dramas including Proof, The Clinic, No Tears, Bachelor’s Walk , Stardust, Pure Mule and Paths to Freedom.

She has been a member of the Programme Bureau of the European Broadcasting Union Fiction Group; the Advisory Panel for Fás/Screen Training Ireland and a  jury member for numerous awards organisations.  She is currently member of the Board of Screen Producers Ireland.

In 1999 Larry Bass established ShinAwiL Productions Ltd.

Larry has Executive Produced the Irish versions of the multi award winning series’, The Apprentice that won 2 Irish Film and Television Awards, Dragons’ Den, MasterChef Ireland and most recently the hugely successful The Voice of Ireland. Other recent productions include Home of the Year, What are you Eating?, Meet the McDonagh’s and Tested on Humans.

The ShinAwiL development team is currently in development on original series’ for the Irish, UK and USA market, both scripted and non-scripted.

Previous credits include Popstars, You’re A Star, Charity You’re A Star, Test The Teachers, Charity Lords of the Ring, Fame The Musical and The Obesity Clinic.

In 2000, Larry was elected to the national Executive of Screen Producers Ireland (SPI), serving as deputy chairman from January 2003 to February 2004, and as Chairman from February 2004 to February 2005. He was reelected to the board in 2015. He also was the Irish member of CEPI from 2003 to 2006.

Larry is an advisory board member of FÁS Screen Training Ireland and Entertainment Masterclass. He has also sat on a jury for the Internationl Emmys, Rose d’Or, BANFF and Real Screen Television Awards.

Larry has guest lectured at DIT Dublin, IADT Dublin, MipTV and MIPCOM, SPAA Australia and Entertainment Masterclass.

Larry served on the Board of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland from 2010 to 2015.

Head of Development

Alan Gillespie joined ShinAwiL in 2010 as Head of Development. Alan holds a BA Hons. Degree in Media Production with Journalism and oversees the development of content in the Dublin and Belfast offices across all genres.

During his tenure Alan has increased ShinAwiL’s output in Entertainment programming and expanded the brand of ShinAwiL into other genres. Notable commissions include, “Dancing with the Stars (Ireland)” ‘The Voice of Ireland’, ‘MasterChef Ireland’, ‘The Obesity Clinic’, ‘Undercover NI’, ‘Get the Numbers, Write’, ‘Bressies’ Teenage Kicks’, ‘Along Home Shores’, ‘Peak Performance’, ‘Tested on Humans’, ‘Home of the Year’, ‘What Are You Eating’ ‘Gift from Death’ and ‘Meet the McDonaghs’.

Steven Courtney has been with ShinAwiL for the past 6 years where he began as a development executive working extensively across the companies slate, developing programmes for Irish and UK broadcasters.

As Head of Digital Steven is responsible for the management of content revenue streams across non-broadcast platforms. This includes curating and producing content for ShinAwiL television properties including “The Voice of Ireland” and “MasterChef”, as well as overseeing the creation of bespoke multiplatform content for brands and advertising agencies.

Steven’s background is firmly based in creative content creation having worked for many years as a director across both documentary and factual entertainment programming for broadcasters as well as online platforms

Aaron Farrel, head of drama at Shinawil
Head of Drama

Aaron Farrell is Head of Drama for Shinawil Productions. He is responsible for building a distinctive slate of projects with strong critical and commercial appeal, and getting these projects financed and on the screen.

He is currently an executive producer on THE THIRD WAVE, David Freyne’s debut feature starring Ellen Page, which shoots late 2016, and developing THE LAST BARBARIAN, the TV drama series being written by Frank Spotnitz, to be directed by Jim Sheridan.

Previously he was a Production Executive on four seasons of Michael Hirst’s VIKINGS, and two seasons of Neil Jordan’s THE BORGIAS. He has also co-produced CALVARY, written and directed by John Michael McDonagh, Oscar nominee Juanita Wilson’s forthcoming release TOMATO RED, and CHERRYBOMB starring Rupert Grint.

After a successful career in broadcasting, Clare began working as a consultant and non-executive director in 2013. She has extensive board experience across the private, public and not-for-profit sectors. She also mentors social entrepreneurs and female entrepreneurs who are scaling up their businesses. 

“Having worked as both a radio producer and a TV producer, her executive career included over 20 years in key leadership roles in RTÉ, including as Head of Independent Production from 1993-2001, where she led RTÉ’s move into investment in drama and feature film.  She was Director of Programmes Television RTÉ from 2001-2008, and  Managing Director of Radio RTÉ from 2009-2013. 

Her current Board positions include the  Irish Times Ltd, the Digital Hub Development Agency, Business to Arts, the Dublin International Film Festival and several other Not-for-Profits. She is a former member of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, The Arts Council, and the Advisory Board of The Abbey Theatre.

 

 

 

 

 

As a Board Member of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, she supports the regulation of content across all broadcasting in Ireland, sustaining independent impartial journalism, and stimulating the provision of high quality, diverse, and innovative programming.

As Lead Entrepreneur with Enterprise Ireland’s Going for Growth/Continuing the Momentum programme, she supports women entrepreneurs who are serious about scaling up their businesses.

Through board positions on the National Film School, Dublin City University Industry Advisory Panel and the new DCU Institute for Future Media and Journalism she supports collaboration between education and industry across several sectors. Her not-for-profit boards reflect her interest in the arts, especially film, and in diversity.

David has been working as an independent consultant since 2000. Since then, he has spent most of his time in a mentoring role with CEOs and senior management, facilitating strategic planning and organisational development.

Prior to this, David worked at senior levels in 5 different multinational companies over a period of almost 30 years, holding GM/ MD/ CEO positions for 10 years.

David has lived and worked in Belgium, USA and the UK, and has been responsible for growing businesses in several international economies. He has served as Chairman or non- executive director in several companies. He is currently Chairman of Xcelerator Machine Translations, as well as chairing a Governance Board on behalf of Science Foundation Ireland.

David graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 1971 with an Honours degree in Natural Sciences, and completed an MSc in Management Practice in 1987. He also holds a diploma from in Executive Coaching from UCD/Smurfit.

His non-work related interests include his family, rugby and golf.

John joined Grant Thornton in 2014 as a Partner and heads up the firm’s Media and Entertainment Practice. Prior to joining Grant Thornton John was with a large Dublin accountancy and business advisory practice where he was a tax partner. John has over 20 years commercial experience in providing tax advice and advisory services to individuals and corporates across a broad range of issues and tax heads. He has particular experience in film and television projects having raised finance and advised on a broad range of transactions involving numerous large international television series, animation series for the US market and numerous feature films, including: Vikings, Ripper Street, Camelot, Moone Boy, Frank and The Guard. He also has considerable experience in advising high net worth individuals and owner-managed businesses with a particular focus on the media and entertainment sector in Ireland and abroad. John has been credited with financing and producing over 100 projects on IMDB.

Focused primarily on raising funding for development and production, Linda Beath works with producers of feature films, feature length documentaries, long form animation and high quality drama for prime time television as an Executive Producer.  She  organises and raises production finance, often via international co-production, attracting broadcasters, distributors and sales agents, regional and national funds and tax incentives.  She often oversees marketing and promotional campaigns drawing on her background as a distributor in Canada and the United States.  Working exclusively in the screen industry sector, her company also consults to production companies on business planning and management, and governmental organisations on support mechanisms and policy.  She regularly runs strategic planning sessions for European production companies to improve their positions in the international marketplace.  Along with other industry experts, she is an active contributor in the discussion and development of new business models.   She is a trainer for producers in the areas of finance, co-production and new industry revenue sources for EAVE, MAIA and with other MEDIA and EuroMed Audiovisual programmes.

Paul Jackson was CEO, Eyeworks UK supervising their format and Entertainment business from 2009-2012. Until December 2008 he was ITV’s Director of Entertainment and Comedy after working as Granada’s Chief Executive Officer in America until February 2006. Before that, Paul worked in Australia as Chief Executive Officer of Granada Productions and spent a period back in the UK as Director of International Production and Entertainment.

He went to Australia from the BBC where he held the role of Controller of Entertainment and Comedy, responsible for five output departments working in television, radio and online.

Paul Jackson was a key member of the original management team, which wrote Carlton’s successful application for the London weekday franchise. He then became Director of Programmes for the new licensee and was appointed Managing Director when the station went on-air in January 1993.

He has a distinguished record as a programme producer. His hits include the BBC’s cult sci-fi sit-com Red Dwarf, 3 Of A Kind (BAFTA & MONTREUX ROSE WINNER) and The Young Ones (BAFTA WINNER), He also co-produced an Oscar-winning success in 1988 with the comedy live action short The Appointments of Dennis Jennings, which starred American comedian Steven Wright and Rowan Atkinson.

Whilst he was CEO of Granada America, the company achieved a run of successes in both broadcast and cable television, including Hell’s Kitchen on Fox and Hit Me Baby One More Time on NBC, both number one shows of the week in the 18-49 demos. Hell’s Kitchen is now in its eleventh series for the Fox network.

Paul achieved several notable successes in the Entertainment and Comedy fields during his time at ITV, most obviously Britain’s Got Talent the highest rated Entertainment show in British TV of the decade and the BAFTA nominated Benidorm which is ITV’s first successful returning comedy series for five years.

From 1994 to 1996 Jackson was Chairman of the Royal Television Society. He was Chairman of Comic Relief from its launch until 1999 and was also Chairman of its parent, Charity Projects.

In 2004 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by his old University in Exeter. He was also a Visiting Professor in the School of English at Exeter. He broadcasts regularly on Radio Four, including his series In Conversation With, which ran for five years and he now fronts Britain In A Box, which has so far run for four series.

Since becoming a freelance television consultant in 2012, he has worked extensively in the UK, the USA, Australia, Israel, Korea and China as well as many European markets. His clients have included All3Media, Keshet Broadcasting, Videojug, CCTV, Shenzhen TV, Hunan TV, SMG, KOCCA, and ITV Studios USA.
